What’s gonna happen?!

Dave! I’m at the hospital.

What’s happening?

Uh, it doesn’t look too good. My nose has been bleeding for three days and they’re telling me my blood pressure is so high that I’m gonna go into cardiac arrest.

Okay what are they gonna do?

Whatever happens, I love you okay?

What’s gonna happen?!

They’re giving me morphine now but it’s not looking good. My blood pressure went so high they said that my blood vessels burst and it could kill me. Whatever happens just know that I love you and stay close to God okay?
Okay but what should I…
Everythings gonna be alright, just stay close to God. I have to go, they want me to close my eyes now.
My eyes filled with water and my stomach sank.
I had to sit down on a stool and process what had just happened. I felt useless.
I felt like a traitor. I was 3,000 miles away from the most important person in my life and he was about to die alone.
After a very long night and lots of phone calls, I finally heard from some family members back home.
Dad survived the night, and was actually showing some improvements.
His blood pressure had finally normalized, but they wanted to keep him a few extra days.
By the end of the week he was released, and I was so happy and relieved, I promised that I would come visit as soon as possible.
When I finally got to see him, we both promised each other we’d do something about our diets.
We were both about 50 pounds overweight.
Even worse, my next doctor visit resulted in a severe warning about my high blood pressure!
My doctor said that if I don’t make a serious change, I’m going to end up like my dad, on several medications for blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension…
Plus, they don’t tell you that each of those pills gives you side effects, causes organ damage, and requires even more pills for those same side effects!
So I vowed to make a change, for my doctor, my own health, and for my dad.
But where was I going to start?
Well, I thought about the one place my dad and I always went when I was a kid:
I grabbed my notebooks, and I went to the library.
I checked out all the most popular diet books.
I examined “Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.”
I poured over "The South Beach Diet."
I devoured "The Flat Belly Diet.”
Then I stumbled onto some old body building books.
I also used forums, facebook groups, and review sites like Amazon to find out what these diets got wrong.
As the janitor was turning out the lights, a light bulb of my own went off in my head:

Let’s start with the first big issue: Mental health
Being addicted to carbs is truly an addiction.
Like all addictions, trying to quit cold turkey will result in WITHDRAWAL.
It’s uncomfortable.
It’s painful.
It feels IMPOSSIBLE to overcome.
This is part of the reason why so many people fall off the bandwagon on their weight loss journey.
For that reason, I came up with a ‘nicotine patch’ approach.
Before I explain what that is, let’s look at the next issue all diet plans overlook:
Social life.
Like I mentioned earlier, dieting rips you away from your friends and family, leading to isolation, loneliness, and depression.
I know this because all the negative comments and reviews on the most popular diet books mentioned how much these dieters missed having their normal lives again!
This is why the meal timing strategy I developed includes 2 “Hall Pass” days that you can move around each week.

Exploiting the fat loss “hormone glitch”

Your body is highly adaptive.
Even the most rigorous calorie cutting and workout routine will eventually lead to a plateau.
This is the 3rd reason so many diet plans lead to despair, despondency, and eventually, depression.
Maybe you’ve worked your butt off and really disciplined yourself in the past.
Maybe you’ve tried exercise, counting calories, meal prepping, hiring a trainer, dragging your friend to exercise with you, and saw some great results in the beginning…
Only to realize that after a month or 2, the weight loss stopped.
Your face started looking full again and the scale started to climb back to where it was.
Or maybe you were too embarrassed to even look at the scale…
I’ve been there, and it’s heartbreaking honestly. You feel like you can’t do anything right. Like you have bad luck, or you’re cursed!
The reason this happens is because leptin, a hormone that’s supposed to keep your metabolism burning like a coal furnace…
… leptin starts to go DOWN, along with your metabolism, after prolonged periods of dieting.
It’s sad.
My heart goes out to you because I was in the same spot, failing to lose weight and getting stuck, over and over again…
… before I found a secret hormone glitch I read about in a bodybuilding book from the 1970s.
You see, during long dieting phases, bodybuilders often reported feeling physically and mentally fatigued.
They found that temporarily increasing carbohydrate intake on a REFEED day actually led to MORE fat loss in the long term…
It also gave them a much needed escape, or as I like to call it, a “hall pass” from their diet!
You might be furrowing your eyebrows thinking “yeah, right! You can take a break from your diet for a day or two, and then go right back to losing even MORE fat? Baloney!”
I know.
I agree, it does sound COUNTERINTUITIVE…
Lucky for us, scientists had to dive in and see if this worked on the average person…
They primed up a study on 21 overweight women.
What they found was shocking, and nothing short of extraordinary.
According to a study done at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada:

“...during refeeding… leptin increased, despite an ongoing loss of fat mass and correlated positively with changes in resting energy expenditure.” (1).

Wow!
In layman’s terms, that means that the occasional REFEED actually increased leptin, increased metabolism, and increased fat loss!
When I found that study, honestly my heart started racing.
The fact that you could give someone a “hall pass’ on their diet, and not only would they lose more FAT…
… they would also feel so much better being able to take a break from the miserable diet!
Plus, I thought, they could use that hall pass day to be a normal person, hanging out with their friends, family, eating, drinking and being merry.
I started to think about it the same way that smokers use a nicotine patch.
Sure you can quit your smoking habit cold turkey, and some people do.
But some people use a nicotine patch from time to time, to give themselves a low dose of the drug they need.
This helps them “wean” off of their addiction.
And if you’re anything like me, your love for pizza, pasta, bread, and sweets is a borderline addiction.
“So a couple hall pass days from a low carb diet just might be the perfect way to truly break through my carb addiction” I thought!
So I made a commitment to myself, and wrote up a meal plan that included 2 hall pass days into my meal plan.
This would allow me to lose weight through a traditional calorie cutting and carb reduction protocol…
… except I would ALSO be able to “take the edge off” by enjoying a break from the discipline…
… this would allow me to spend time with my friends and family twice a week, going out, eating whatever they ate, with no weird glances and best of all…
